In these areas, the lubricant molecules form a thin adsorbed film, or a chemical reaction occurs, providing some protection against wear and friction. However, the thin film may not be sufficient to prevent metal-to-metal contact entirely.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>This lubrication mechanism is used when the conditions are unsuitable for hydrodynamic lubrication. In this case, the lubricant film formed between two surfaces in relative motion is too thin, or the pressure applied is too great for hydrodynamic lubrication to work effectively. Boundary lubrication prevents direct metal-to-metal contact between the surfaces by utilising solid additives or chemical
